Ron Benrey

The Key Details:

I’ve been a writer all my life (my first job was Electronics Editor at Popular Science Monthly). Most of my day jobs were writing positions at large corporations. I’ve written lots of speeches for senior executives and a ton of marketing communications materials. More recently, I coauthored nine romantic suspense novels with Janet. The first was published when I was past 50. I’ve also written two novellas under my own byline, more than a thousand magazine articles, and ten non-fiction books. The latest “Know Your Rights” — an easy to understand guide to everyday law — will be published by Sterling Publishing in December, 2010.

I enjoy teaching people how to write both non-fiction and fiction. I taught writing at the University of Pittsburgh, as a member of the adjunct faculty. I currently teach at major writers’ conferences on topics ranging from plotting and publishability, to copyright law and computer technology for writers.

I hold degrees in electrical engineering, management, and law. I’m a member of the Bar of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Janet and I live in North Carolina.

Other Interesting Facts:

  • I installed Linux on all the Benreys’ computers … because it’s free and because Janet has a really tough time crashing Linux
  • I recently bought an iPad, chiefly to use as an ebook reader (Janet expropriated the family Kindle)
  • When Janet and I write romance, I write the “romantic” bits
  • Janet calls my office the “bat cave” — which bewilders me, because it’s airy and well lit (although not by sunlight)
  • I enjoy riding our Piaggio MP3. an odd motor scooter/motorcycle that has two front wheels that tilt together to zip around curves.

Hi, I’m reading Little White Lies. I’m a Brit, and I’m trying to figure out if you and Janet are British. I’m thinking not because every now and then you’ll use a “Britishism” that doesn’t really sound like something a true Brit would use. I’ve Googled you both, but am unable to determine your nationality.
    You’re American, right?

    Thanks for reading this!

You’re half right. I’ve always been an American, but Janet was born in London and grew up in Tunbridge Wells.

Pippa — the heroine of Little White Lies — is an expat Brit, which may excuse her occasional “misuse” of English idioms.
